i dont want to spend over $100 on a gps unit and i've seen some at wal-mart within my price range will those work for geocaching?|||For under $100, it'll be really basic but it will be enough for geocaching. You're probably looking at the Garmin eTrex or eTrex H. They allow you to enter coordinates and then use the compass page to guide you to the coordinates. That's pretty much all you need from a GPS receiver to go geocaching. At some point you might want to buy the data cable so you can send caches from your computer to the GPS receiver instead of manually entering the coordinates.|||I just went to Sheilds 2 weeks ago and got a ifinder go2. and with tax and all it was under $100.00. It doesn't have all the bells and wistles that thehigher priced one have but it works great for cacheing. My thinking is that if I'm trompin around in weeds, swamps and who knows what else, I would be most likely trippin over my own feet alot and since I have no grace then would lead to flat on my face and GPS in ???. Or get cought in a downpour? Or forgot on the top of the car? It`s easier to loose $100 compared to $500. And I have used other units and this I think compares well to them. For what I need it for. I also do CERT and SAR and this would work for them also. I've gotten alot of use out this unit already and so far I'm pretty happy. So if your looking to get by on less money cheaper is ok, just check it out first. Oh and the best part is a few of my friends also have this unit and they got theirs for much much less at Menards***pout!***|||I'm sure you can find a decent used one on Ebay or a refurbished item on Overstock.com.
YOu only need a really basic GPS for GeoCaching.
All the bells and whistles are nice to have but certainly not necessary.
Here's a Dandy on REI.com outlet site:

My personal favorite gps unit is a garmin. simple to use, less the 200 bucks. you can get some good deals on used ones on ebay and in the geocaching forums on geocaching.com
