Does a GPS system have a monthly fee or is it just a one time fee?

Those GPS systems that tell you when to turn and stuff, do you just pay the couple hundred for the system and that's it, or do you have to pay money per month for the satellite service? If you do, how much is it? Thanks!|||The basic service that gives you the turn-by-turn direction is free.

There are optional things that you have to pay for: Traffic service that alerts you of construction and accidents, and sometimes provides weather info also - that's usually $50-70 per year (sometimes you have to buy an additional receiver that does not come with the GPS).

You can also buy map updates when the map data installed in your GPS is obsolete. A map package for the US goes for around $70.|||You just pay for the initial unit. The service is free. But, give it time--someone will point out that this should not be a free service.

It picks up on satellite waves.|||it is completely FREE! you just have to have a GPS-enabled device :)
