What is the difference between a garmin nuvi and a garmin gps ?

I am considering purchasing a gps and I am confused when I see GPS and Nuvi. I want this for automobile travel.|||A GPS receiver is a device that uses the Global Positioning System to estimate your location.

All Garmin products, with the exception of the Forerunner 50, have a built-in GPS receiver. This includes the Nuvi. The Nuvi is Garmin's latest generation of automobile GPS.

The Nuvi is a device that features preloaded maps containing detailed street data with the ability to calculate routes from Point A to Point B. The higher-end Nuvi units can also calculate multi-point routing. (From A to B to C to D to...)

There are *many* more advanced features to a Nuvi, so use the information on Garmin's website to whittle it down to the one that fits your needs:

They also have the zumo line for motorcycles.

The main contenders are garmin and tomtom. i find the User Interface better on TomTom but their map is worse for USA use.

The basic nuvi 200 is a no frills receiver that will get you to your destination on the cheap.

For about the same amount (around $100) you can cheap receivers from smaller companies that include text to speech (spell name instead of saying "turn left") i have not tried those.|||ngufra is right. nuvi is a line of GPS. If you want to compare the different Garmin GPS systems, check Diffen (see the source). They have info about both nuvi and non-nuvi GPS. Best thing there is when you compare two systems, you can easily see differences and similarities.
