How good are the Points of Interest maps with GPS systems?

Specifically, do these maps generally tend to have fairly extensive retail/restaurant/business listings? I have used the Hertz NeverLost system and was pretty pleased with it as it had a pretty large database of business listings and was pretty current. I want to know if the typical GPS manufacturers can compare with this in regards to their POI maps.|||The NeverLost system is made by Magellan, so what it has will be on par with what is produced by Garmin and TomTom as well. All of these GPS manufacturers get their data from the same two companies - TeleAtlas and NAVTEQ. The Point of Interest data tends to be more out-of-date than the road data, so you have to take their currency and positional accuracy with a grain of salt. About the GPS receiver itself, I recommend going with Garmin or TomTom, as Magellan has abysmal customer support that consists of off-shored script readers.|||Hertz NeverLost is a partnership between Hertz / Thales aka NeverLost by Navigation Solutions.

To start with, the older Magellan 750Nav version 4.3.3.12 can have the full POI information up to 15 million, but there is tons that is not needed nor up to date.

Problem here is memory space, so a Magellan RoadMate 2000, 1200 or any of the lower end Magellan system may have only 1.2 million of POI's unlike the Hertz NeverLost system.

As far as Garmin goes, they normally have between 5-6M POI's provided by NavTeq.

TomTom uses Tele Atlas which they just acquired, and their POI number can be as high as 12 million but on the lower end TomTom ONE, there will only be about 1 million again due to memory size and price.

NavTeq and Tele Atlas both charge for POI information so it is not always to the manufacturers benefit to offer everything on their lower end product because they need to somehow differentiate the higher end product with more mapping coverage and higher number of POI information.

If you wish to have the BEST POI search, I would say try picking up a DASH GPS unit for only about $299 and there is a monthly subscription fee, this PND will allow you to go on the Internet and search Yahoo local search so it is almost an unlimited amount of POI and it is probably more up to date than what is supplied on the static POI content offered by Magellan, Garmin and TomTom.

Another GPS option could be the smart phones or Apple 3G iPhones, with GPS receiver, they have the ability to search the Internet in real time for POI contents and map the location and find the phone number, the only issue with the 3G iPhone is currently it does not offer turn by turn voice direction and it does not offer heading up icon. Display refresh rate is slow to refresh also when viewing in satellite mode.

You will see more of the Internet search features available soon from these GPS PND manufacturers.

If you wish to buy a Magellan system that have tons of POI, consider the Magellan Maestro 4250 or the Maestro 4050, both have tons of POI along with AAA content and ratings. Magellan is the only one that offers this AAA content information, TomTom and Garmin does not offer an additional content beside what is loaded in the unit already without paying additional fees.

You can find out more information about GPS systems at Auto Nav 2000 Plus, Inc. http://www.autonav2000.com/

Or if you wish to compare a few GPS systems, try looking up GPS4Rent at http://www.gps4rent.com/ and rent a few GPS units to compare with for yourself to see which system fit your needs best.

Good luck|||To put this into perspective; There are only two major mapping %26amp; data collectors in the world; NavTeq %26amp; TeleAtlas.

NavTeq's data is used as the base data, for applications such as Google and Yahoo Maps; Devices such Garmin, Magellan and GlobalSat; And Car producers such as BMW and Chrysler.

How current a devices data, is based on how recent the data was collected (ie Q42007) in the version of the device you are using, or when was the device's base/ POI data was last updated.

With that being said, the quality of the POI base data is graded by two measures; quantity of total POI's (ie: 6 or 9 million POI's) and catagories of POI's (Resturants, golf courses, businesses, airport etc).

So when seeking to buy a new "Navigational Device" (Dash mounted touch screen GPS unit), keep two questions in mind to the seller/ producer; How many POI's? And What version/ quarter is the base data from? - maybe a thrid, Who's base data is being used?

I help people (consumer %26amp; commericial) everyday understand and use GPS.|||I am no expert. I think the Poi's on the GPS units you can get in the stores are great. I have used many of the Garmin units and find that the higher end units are a little more detailed in the "where am I" feature but over all the lower end unit such as the Nuvi 200 has pretty accurate info as well. The even nicer point about having a portable GPS is that you can put it in pedestrian mode and use it in the city while you are walking as well... convenient and easy to use.

How to find gps coordinates on google maps from a cell phone photo?

I have taken pictures from my cell phone, and in the info it shows gps coordinates.

I just want to know how to use those coordinates on a website like google maps to find the location|||In most cases, you can paste the information directly into google maps, and it will automatically find the location for you. Google maps understands a lot of different ways of expressing coordinates. Occasionally the coordinates will be ambiguous and you'll be in the wrong hemisphere.

The website below will automatically give you a google map from a jpg image without you having to do anything.

What kind of programming do I need to learn to create a GPS network?

What software and languages do I have to learn in order to know how satellites, cell phones, GPS systems and computers work? A business partner of mine told me to learn 4 languages and I can easily master them all. But what is the over general knowledge I need to be able have, to give the schematics on a new GPS system I am creating for my start up company? And where can I learn this for free and in a short time|||Depends what phone you will be programming on.

Android: Java

Windows Mobile: C++, C#

Windows Phone: Silverlight, Microsoft XNA

Symbian/ Nokia: Java?

Motorola: Java

iPhone: Cocoa "Objective C"

All of them support programming access to cell towers and gps, but they each require research and practice to get comfortable with the langauge. I don't think XNA has the support, but I could also be wrong. I blame a lack of sufficient research.

Try visiting Xda-developers.com to get more help. It is a large active community of mobile user and programmers.

To learn about GPS programming in general, use wikipedia as a jumping point. From that last I remember, there is 2 world views in the GPS location programs: round Earth and oblong/ bumpy Earth. Round Earth is easier to calculate position, but inaccurate. Bumpy Earth is more accurate, but requires more trig skills and cpu cycles.|||1) You'll need to learn programming itself. Learning a language (or 3 dozen languages) isn't learning programming.

2) C++, assembly, almost anything, depending on what devices you;re writing code for, and what kind of code you're writing.

3) Schematics are hardware, not programming.

4) Define "short time". Programming itself will take you about 6 months. Learning the math used in GPS calculations will take 6 months to a year. Learning the physics of GPS will take a while - months to years.

5) Knowing how computers work? I've been doing this for over 37 years, and I;m still learning. I suggest that you hire people who know the things it's going to take you years to learn. (Engineers, software or hardware, don't make good salaries because they learned engineering in a short time, they get paid for years and years of study, both in college and forever after graduation.)

Ideas aren't worth even a dime a dozen, it's the ability to bring them to market that's worth money. So if all you have is an idea, and not the knowledge and experience to bring it to market, or the capital to hire people who can, I wouldn't bother.|||C++ and Java [Definite!],

Can you take GPS unit onto a plane for international flights?

Can you take GPS unit onto a plane for international flights from Canada to the US and back again, like the ones for cars?|||GPS devices are allowed, but you can't turn them on during the entire flight. Most airlines have the airshow channel these days that shows your position, altitude, speed, distance to your destination etc., bascially the same thing and it won't get you in trouble or interfere with flight communications.|||You must be Canadian. If there was any reason they wouldn't allow GPS from Canada he would have specified but there isn't so he didn't. International = Canada too. GREAT answer Gerald!

Is there a GPS unit that you can add missing streets?

I'm researching GPS units to go into emergency vehicles that serve very rural areas. Experience with other units, they always seem to be missing some of the small "back roads". Is there a unit out there that you can add these missing roads in own your own?|||Not that I know of, but if you're doing this professionally I'd contact a salesman at Garmin, TomTom, Magellen, etc. They will know if there are "professional" models that do more than consumer models. Contact info should be on their websites.

You can (or should be able to) update the databases on your GPS on a regular basis along with the firmware though an internet connected computer. Usually though USB.|||I completely understand. Most mapping applications are FAR behind the actual street data. My address has existed for over seven years, but still not on any mapping software. Google maps doesn't show it in map mode, but it is clearly there in satellite mode, and those are old as well.

What is the best value for a hand held GPS for outdoor hiking?

I am in the market to purchase a hand held GPS system. I am interested in the Garmin eTrex Venture Cx, but I seek other opinions. Which brand and model have worked well for you?|||The three top picks in Backpacker Magazine's gear guide issue which arrived today include the Garmin eTrax Venture Cx $286, Garmin GPSmap 60CSx $538 and stripped down CS version $482, and the Magellan eXplorist XL $400. The latter two worked well in canyons and timber, while the first one drops to 125 foot radius precision in those areas.|||Garmin e-trex legend. Very basic, practical, easy to use. At a fair price|||I use the Garmin 60C which is now discontinued but the new version the 60csx would be a great all around gps. I use mine for backpacking, kayaking, snowboarding and mountain biking. Rugged design, water proof, shockproof.

What does the Blackberry 8310 need to work the GPS?

Hi i am about to sign up for a Blackberry 8310 on the o2 network. I've heard a lot of good reviews about this handset but i really don't know how the GPS works on it. Do i have to subscribe to something or do i need to pay extra for it? I'm a complete novice at it so can someone kindly explain in simple english the answers please.

Also can anyone who has a 8310 please tell me if they think they are worth it?

Why are GPS satellites in medium orbit rather than geostationary?

Is there an advantage, other than probably cost, to having the GPS satellites at 12,000 miles rather than in geostationary orbit? Would it work either way?|||Geostationary can only apply to equatorial orbits. With GPS satellites it makes more sense to have them in a polar orbit so that they can cover the entire Earth's surface over time. Also I presume that putting a satellite at the relatively large distance required for a stationary orbit (22,000 miles) would significantly reduce the precision with which the distance could be measured (GPS doesn't use triangulation, it works by measuring the distance between satellite and receiver).|||No, they need to be in a medium orbit.

You want to use GPS even at high latitudes, but geostationary satellites are hard to receive close to the poles. Next, you want to have all satellites in a special constellation or formation. When the satellites are all close together in the sky, for example in a straight line or at the same point, the accuracy of the calculations drops as the signals will get the same disturbances because of the atmosphere. Also, the mathematical calculations inside the receiver will not work well then. Then, you also want this constellation to repeat in a good pattern at regular times. The GPS distance means the constallations repeat every 72 hours, other distances change this. Regular repetition patterns mean, that your receiver will have it easier to find satellites and calculate their position, even when the ground station of the GPS fails to update the orbit information onboard the satellites (The satellites don't know this themselves, you need ground stations for the required accuracy).

Finally, you also have to consider the launch vehicles you can use. Today this is not such a big problem, but for GPS, there had been the Delta II planned, which has tight mass limitations.|||Geostationary satellites have a hard time covering far north and south regions. Once you are 75 degrees north or south, the satellite is too low on the horizon to be useful. Even at 50 degrees north or south, the satellite would be only 25 degrees above the horizon, and would not cover the far side of hills or mountains, or into valleys.

Plus, the power requirements to send a signal 12,000 miles is only 30% compared to geostationary orbit. That makes a BIG difference in weight, cost, and lifetime.|||The previous replies about geostationary orbits pretty much answered your questions.

However, there is also some misinformation about GPS given in the previous answers that I'd like to address:

SiriusB said: With GPS satellites it makes more sense to have them in a polar orbit so that they can cover the entire Earth's surface over time.

Firstly, GPS satellites are NOT in polar orbits. Secondly, a polar orbit doesn't cover the earth any more efficiently than non-polar orbits. What gives GPS satellites the coverage they do (which is 100% of the earth) is the way the 24+ satellites are distributed in their six orbital planes.

SiruisB said: Also I presume that putting a satellite at the relatively large distance required for a stationary orbit (22,000 miles) would significantly reduce the precision with which the distance could be measured

The presumption is incorrect. The control and space segments of GPS would still monitor satellite positions and update the system accordingly.

urwumpe said: The GPS distance means the constallations repeat every 72 hours, other distances change this.

GPS orbital periods are 12 hrs (11hrs, 56min).

Does it cost a monthly fee for auto gps systems?

I am considering geting an auto gps system and was wondering if there is a monthly cost, and how accurate they are on giving directions?|||If you live in an area with a lot of construction / growth then you will find the GPS is often off a little when driving because an on-ramp has been moved or new streets added. It will also often not list newer shops, gas stations, etc.

If you get an after market model like the other poster suggested then it will be much cheaper to update the mapping software in the unit from time to time. (I update my Garmin about once every two years for about $100)

Also be aware that if you live in a state like California you can get a ticket for having a GPS (or any device) stuck to your winshield so an aftermarket model becomes less attractive.|||they are very accurate and high tech, and no they dont have a monthly fee. I recommend getting a portable aftermarket system instead of one from your dealership since the new aftermarket ones are about 10 times cheaper and just as high quality if not more. There are also several portable ones that are handheld that are just as good (ie TomTom or Garmin).

Can a company use a gps system on a company vehicle without the driver knowing?

Company decided to give a vehicle (not really necessary to begin with) and when asked if they were tracking via gps system they said no. Is there laws or rules for using a gps system without knowledge? in PA.|||Yes they can but why should they hide the fact? If you are using their vehicle on company business they should be forthright about their use of tracking devices and you should always assume you are being tracked.|||if its their vehicle used in your conducting business for that company, yes, they absolutely can. monitoring employees has been the procedure for many years, especially in this day and age. some insurance company's may insist on it.|||No, it's their vehicle. It's like a company monitoring the Internet usage of their employees.|||If the company owns the car and you use the car for work, then yes.|||if the vehicle belongs to the company they can do what they wish....|||If its their vehicle, yes they can.

How do GPS and cellphones interract so that you must have both in the car?

Can you have a GPS without any cellphone involvement? If so which one is best for that?|||They don't have to interact. A GPS unit is a receiver of signals. It does not need to send any. It uses maps programmed with latitude and longitude coordinates, and computes where you are going and how to get there, using the signals sent from the GPS satellites.

Now certainly cellphones can interact and in those circumstances you can have the cell phone send out the GPS data of where you are at the moment to whoever might needed it, like 9/11 or perhaps some application you have on the phone.

If you are looking for a navigation unit for giving driving directions, I have a Garmin Nuvi. It seems to do just fine. There's several model numbers in that line with various options and screen sizes.

How do you add a personal vehicle picture to a tomtom gps?

I am trying to add a picture of my car and download it to my TomTom gps. I have the picture but I'm not sure how to make the background red before i download it to the gps??|||How to create your own car symbol:

The image size should be 80x80 pixels.

The image background should be red (RGB 255,000,000). The red background in the image will be shown as transparent by your TomTom.

The image should be saved as a 24 bit .bmp (bitmap).

TIP: Note that car symbols can appear on dark or light areas on the map, so your car symbol might not stand out on all areas. Therefore it鈥檚 a good idea to add a light line around a dark icon and a dark line around a light icon.

How to upload your own image to your TomTom:

Does a GPS system have a monthly fee or is it just a one time fee?

Those GPS systems that tell you when to turn and stuff, do you just pay the couple hundred for the system and that's it, or do you have to pay money per month for the satellite service? If you do, how much is it? Thanks!|||The basic service that gives you the turn-by-turn direction is free.

There are optional things that you have to pay for: Traffic service that alerts you of construction and accidents, and sometimes provides weather info also - that's usually $50-70 per year (sometimes you have to buy an additional receiver that does not come with the GPS).

You can also buy map updates when the map data installed in your GPS is obsolete. A map package for the US goes for around $70.|||You just pay for the initial unit. The service is free. But, give it time--someone will point out that this should not be a free service.

It picks up on satellite waves.|||it is completely FREE! you just have to have a GPS-enabled device :)

What is the difference between a garmin nuvi and a garmin gps ?

I am considering purchasing a gps and I am confused when I see GPS and Nuvi. I want this for automobile travel.|||A GPS receiver is a device that uses the Global Positioning System to estimate your location.

All Garmin products, with the exception of the Forerunner 50, have a built-in GPS receiver. This includes the Nuvi. The Nuvi is Garmin's latest generation of automobile GPS.

The Nuvi is a device that features preloaded maps containing detailed street data with the ability to calculate routes from Point A to Point B. The higher-end Nuvi units can also calculate multi-point routing. (From A to B to C to D to...)

How is GPS service offered to civilians at no cost?

How is it that civilians are offered GPS service at no cost? I understand that it is being provided by the government. Is it paid for by tax money which would allow the general public to have access to GPS service? Will it ever be privatized such that companies will start charging consumers to have access to GPS signals?|||there are old and outdated sattalites that give a radio signal to broadcast thier location. Since it is a one way radio transmission, and does not recieve like new TV sattallites, they cannot moniter who picks up on the signals.

All a GPS is a radio reciever with a Trigonometry calcualtor to Tri-angulate the sattallite positions and relate it to your global position hence the name Global Positioning system.

They are sending up newer more advanced GPS sattallites, maybe then there may be service charges as with everything else., and may even turn the old ones off if they really feel greedy|||Its just like the internet. It was developed for the military for supper accurate mapping and later was moved into the private sector for other types of mapping. Any time you buy or use a product that is shipped either by truck train or by sea a very small amount of the tax you pay goes to maintaining and servicing this system. Also some of the money spent on military budgets is spent on this system as well. On a side note: the amount of accuracy of the hand held and automotive systems is only about 20% as accurate as the system is capable of. For every day use this is all anyone needs. I know the system is much, much more capable but the exact figures are a military secret. On the net there are all kinds of guesses as to what this actually is, but the realistic answer is that it's a secret.|||You can thank former President Ronald Reagan for GPS signals available to the public. Are some GPS devices more accurate than others?

I need a device that can detect GPS coordinates precisely. Do most (all?) GPS devices pinpoint locations equally? Or do I need to buy a super expensive device?

Any suggestions on which GPS device to buy?

Thanks!|||Yes, some GPS systems are better than others. But you pay a lot for the extra accuracy.

Note: Precision is how many digits the display gives you, accuracy is how many of those digits are correct. Most GPS systems will be precise down to ~1cm however very few will be that accurate.

Within mass market consumer devices there will only be slight differences, electronically and from a software point of view they are all very similar. They will all perform about the same, between 2-5m average error for a good unit and 4-10m for a bad unit.

The difference between a good and bad unit is almost entirely the antenna, a tiny antenna with a poor view of the sky jammed in next to lots of high speed electronics won't work as well as a big antenna pointed in the correct direction and shielded from noise.

In the consumer space get a reasonably priced GPS and an external antenna for it and you'll be as accurate as is possible working with a reasonable budget.

If you want more accuracy then the price starts to go up.

You can get Sub-meter GPS (typically defined as meaning 68% of points will be within 1 meter of the true location) for about $1000 upwards.

Google will find you a few places that sell those to the public.

Anything better and you're generally into the region where you need to go through a GIS, mapping or survey equipment dealer rather than just buying online.

If you want errors under 30cm then you're looking at ~$5,000 or more depending on the features, if you want to accuracies in the 1-2cm region then you'll be looking at $20,000+

Edit:

And I'd like to thank Jhonny for the nice copy and paste of my explanation of self jamming taken from another question. I notice he removed the part about external antennas, presumably because his GPS doesn't have that feature.

I am however a little disappointed that he didn't list me as a source for his answer ;-)|||GPS devices are a very good source to use when traveling. |||Nope, they are all not created equal. The Newelectronx GPS will have better position accuracy due to a better antenna and less self jamming (one big problem with other GPS systems is that the electronics in the GPS generates RF noise which gets into the antenna and makes it harder to pick up the GPS signals, the tighter packed things are the worse this gets. My GPS has 12 satellites and they all lock on to give me an accurate read all the time. Also the software is very fast and efficient unlike your common garmin or tomtom. A lot of GPS devices have an crappy antenna inside of them. Google problem with the gps that ppl are referring here and you will find out that allot ppl complain about garmin. You also want to consider a GPS with good battery life. Mine gets at least 10 hours in standby and last all day under use. Also comes with house, car, and computer charger - and kitchen sink too, just joking about the sink. LOL

The other big difference is cost - you dont have to spend allot of money to get the best GPS. I think that phrase you get what you paid for was made up in the 60's - well this is not the 60's any more... LMFA Nowadays you just know where to look to get the deals. Most ppl buy refurbished crap off of eBay or amazon because they dont know any better, but if you knew where to get quality USA made products for half the price then would always have the best for less in price. So, dont believe that cliche about if you spend more you get the best. I have spent $450 on a garmin before and still wasnt happy, but my new gps fits me perfectly and I didnt spend half as much on it.

Also consider map updates, they will normally cost you $60-$100 per update. That expense alone will supersede the cost of the GPS in one payment.

Dont get any lower model GPS's and make sure the GPS can at least include free map updates, bluetooth for wireless and hands free cell phone talking (i love this feature), a big screen (anything 5 inches or bigger is GREAT - helps with visibility while you drive and keeps you out of accidents LOL - dont fall for the 4.3 or 4.7 inch screen crap), and turn by turn spoken word directions. Anything less than that is not worth buying - no matter how much it costs.|||No, all GPSr's are not created equal. The more satellites the GPS can lock onto the more accurate. My Garmin can handle 12 channels, with all 12 channels locked in, it is accurate to within about 12 feet. Good enough for hiking or geocaching, but not good enough for surveying.|||it honestly doesnt matter if you buy a expensive one or not i have a garmin gps and its fine ,and i'm never afraid of getting lost anymore :-) it also tracks the fasttest you went on your trip or ride and when i go to the high way i always try and go over 100 lol|||hey dude the cheaper one you buy the crappier it is thats the rule of life but the gps i have is decently priced and it gets you about a block or less where you wanna go|||You can get commercial GPS systems that are somewhat more accurate than consumer GPS receivers.

What is/Is there a gps with bluetooth capabilities that can be attached to the auxillary port of a vehicle?

Preferably portable. I have researched many gps but I can't seem to find one. I want a cheaper way than a factory installed, in-dash gps/bluetooth|||Maybe.

By Auxillary Port I assume you men the thing that used to be called the Cigarette Lighter - the usual power outlet on a car.

And by bluetooth capability, I assume you mean that, instead of using the built-in speaker on the GPS, you want the directions to go to a bluetooth headset. Yes, this is available on several makes.

Many makers also allow your GPS to interface with your mobile phone through bluetooth, which allows them to get real-time updates (traffic reports, road closures).

If you want to be able to send spoken instructions to the GPS through your bluetooth headset, we`re talking a different beast, however. Despite the TV commercials, this kind of speech-recognition interface is pretty buggy. Your request to GO TO HOME DEPOT ends up being interpreted as GO HOME, for example.

How to remove the dashboard gps plate/mount from your car?

i have a garmin gps and i put the black circular disc ( with a white sticky side and a side to for the suction cup of the gps mount)

how do i safely remove it without damaging my dashboard? its stuck on there pretty tightly.|||Actually, I know of two ways to do it. Wait for a nice hot day and gently pull up on the plate with your fingers, if it's nice and hot, the glue should let go slowly and you'll be able to get it off without damage. You'll have some of the glue on your dash, but that will come off with WD40 or a product called "Goo Gone".

The other method, if it's not a nice hot day is to use a hair dryer to heat the plate and remove it the same as above.

There is a lot of older navigation equipment out there and asking people about it I have found is generally not reliable. I had an older unit in my first plane and asking three different pilots gave me three different answers on various methods of operation. Is it possible to obtain a subdermal GPS device for a human?

My uncle has fathered his first children and has been worrying lately about the possibility of being separated from them. He's asked me to look around the internet to see if I can come up with any information on where he might find someone who will implant a GPS device into his children. I'm coming up empty handed so I thought maybe you guys will have some more information for me.

Thanks!|||GPS isn't feasible for human usage just yet... the battery usage alone wouldn't make it feasible just yet unless there was a power charging port to plug the unit in.

Maybe it will be possible in the future, but it just can't work now. The closest thing we have is subdermal microchips that can identify an animal... so a vet or dog pound can scan the chip and have owner information (in case the ID tags fall off or something), but they have to get the scanner close to the chip as it doesn't send off a strong enough signal to detect it from far away. How do you turn off the annoying beeping sound of a Toyota Highlander GPS?

I'm going to go by memory, I'm not sitting in front of the touch screen right now. Also, you don't mention which year your Highlander is, but this works for either generation.

Below your touch screen, there will be MENU and INFO buttons. These adjust the navi system's basic settings. Pressing them will get you into the screens that allow you to turn on/off the voice guidance, voice commands, beeps when a button is pressed- several sounds the GPS makes. Simply scroll through the various screens and turn off what you don't want on.

You can turn off the beep and leave the voice guidance on, if you want, they are under different settings.

I honestly can't remember if the MENU or INFO button will get you to the series of screens to adjust your sounds (it's been too long since I've adjusted them), but it will be under one of those two button commands.

I know the navi manual reads like an encyclopedia, but it does list how to access the settings pages on the touch screen using those two buttons, if nothing else. Just look up MENU and INFO in the index.

Good luck.|||Thank you so much! I'm sure it will help a LOT.

How do I find out how many GPS satellites are currently over a city?

Is there something that will tell me how many GPS satellites are over a city (or even a state) at a given time?|||grab a gun start shooting in the air hope that one falls down|||This does not answer your question precisely, but the "outdoors" type of handheld GPS receivers have a screen that presents a sort of all-around skyview. The satellites that your GPS "sees" appear as points distributed across the skyview screen. Satellites overhead appear in the middle of the display. Satellites further away (near the horizon) appear near the edges of the display. This skyview screen at least gives you an idea of the number of satellites near you.

But if you want a "lookup" web page for any city anywhere, sorry, I don't know of one.|||Either of these two links should give you what you want. They are both windows only programs which you would need to install.

This isn't something most users care about, the tools are intended for survey users who sometimes do care about that sort of thing. This means that the tools are overkill (and overly complex) for what you want to do but will let you see which satellites will be in view at any given time and location.

You will need to install the tool, download a current almanac (the file giving the current satellite orbit information) and then give it your location in latitude/longitude. But after that it should be able to tell you everything you want to know.

What is the difference between AGPS and GPS in mobiles?

I've been looking at the HTC Touch Diamond and IPhone 3G and I noticed that IPhone 3G only has AGPS while Diamond has both.

I did a search and found out that AGPS is assisted by cellular towers and etc to pinpoint location more precisely.

I'm curious as to whether will using AGPS and GPS incur charges from my network provider?|||if you have an AGPS it needs to be connect to the internet to find you, so yes you will incur data charges if you don't have a data package. If the phone just has a GPS it will still use the internet to load the maps, so either will you will incur data charges.|||AGPS means that the GPS system in the phone requires assistance from the cell network in order to give a position.

GPS will work all the time, AGPS requires you be in an area with network coverage.

Nothing to do with the internet.

|||GPS is simply the standard "takes about a minute or two" to get your location from satellites.

AGPS is the exact same thing, only instead of randomly finding satellites, it finds your approximate location using cell towers and wi-fi networks. Then finds only the satellites within that range and goes out. It's a ton faster.

Therefore, the iPhone and the HTC Touch both have AGPS. There's no GPS and AGPS, because AGPS is the same thing only with an extra feature. If you're in the middle of the desert with no signal, you'll still get your location as the GPS part will still work.

Technically you need a data plan for the iPhone 3G, so while it will incur data charges, it won't matter. Remember that the mobile phones with GPS pretty much don't have built-in maps unless you pay extra for them. Most of them use the unlimited data and download maps onto the phone itself. Therefore, while it does use data to use AGPS, it won't make a difference because you will (or should) have unlimited data.

The gps system that has been put in place by the United States is exactly what it says, a Global Posutioning System.

There are 24 or so satellites around the entire globe that transmit signals worlwide to anyone on the ground or in the air that has an appropriate receiver. And that receiver is not espensive. They can be purchased as low as about $100 US for some models. Most cell phones today include a GPS receiver as well. Any of these can be used anyplace on the planet that has an open view of the sky. The only location based limit on the usefullness of a particular gps receiver is the local maps that are loaded in the unit. Most units are loaded with a set of road maps for a particular country or region. Even without maps loaded for a region, all GPS's will provide you with the latitude and longitude data for your current location, and that information can be referenced to any map that you have. Most gps units will also give you an altitude, speed and direction of movement output as well as a universal time output based on the satellite's exteremely accurate clocks.

The GPS service itself is free and available to anyone worldwide. The difference between what signals are available to the public and what is available to the US government is in regard to accuracy. Bottom line is that the public accessible accuracy is somewhere on the order of 3 to 10 meters while the Government version is probably under 1M in accuracy. Pretty darn good for a free service that anyone can use!|||gps is based on satellites therefore it works anywhere in the world.

It is illegal to mount a gps unit in the automobile windshield?

I heard that Windshield Mounting of GPS is going to be legalized in California, but I just not sure when this is going to happen, Do you know something about this? Still this illegal?|||The provincial Highway Traffic Act prohibits having any object obstructing the driver's view through the windshield or windows.

Section 73(1) HTA states that "no person shall drive a motor vehicle upon a highway, with any sign, poster or other non-transparent material or object placed on the windshield or on any window of such motor vehicle; or with any object placed in, hung on or attached to the motor vehicle, in a manner that will obstruct the driver's view of the highway or any intersecting highway."

To avoid possibly running afoul of the law, it might be best to mount your GPS unit to the front of the dash (not on top) below the level of the windshield.

For safety, motorists should only rely on audio directions from the GPS rather than watching the screen when driving.

Charges under S. 73(1) HTA carry a $110 penalty. And, yes, before you write in, I'm aware that police themselves often have equipment (radar, large strobes etc.) mounted on their cruiser dashboard that blocks the driver's clear view of the road ahead. No exemption for police under this section of the HTA could be located.

Ontario Transportation Ministry :

Safe driving requires that you focus your attention on driving .

Navigation devices, when used properly, can make driving safer by helping to guide you to your destination with audio instructions as you drive. The risks associated with these devices typically occur when drivers try to manually reprogram them while driving.

Drivers who fail to pay attention to the driving task can face severe consequences.

For example, a "careless driving" conviction under S. 130 of the Highway Traffic Act carries a fine of up to $1,000, six demerit points, possible jail time, and a driver's licence suspension. Alternatively, a "dangerous driving" conviction under S. 249 of the Criminal Code of Canada carries a maximum $2,000 fine and up to five years in jail. The ministry will further examine this issue to see what next-generation driver distraction legislation could look like.|||no i don't think so... i've seen them there before...|||no y wud it b|||i dont think that it is illegal because thats where they are made to go so why would they be illegal???|||In 2 states but in 48 other it is legal|||I only know that it is currently illegal in CA.|||As long as it does not obstruct the drivers vision in any way whatsoever, its legal. Is it possible to install a gps in a car?

I just bought a 2008 Honda Cr-v and i want to have a gps installed in the vehicle. Is it possible?|||Yes, they have head units now with GPS included. However it is pricey and it would be cheaper just to buy a GPS and suction cup it to your windshield.|||it would probably be cheaper to consider a hand held / car gps system rather than a in deck gps system. in deck are very pricey, inaccurate, and like pulling teeth when you need to get them upgraded. generally upgrades for in dash gps are way up in the $300 area. seriously, that much to have a tech put a cd in your car. LOL

Checkout some handle version and save yourself some money. There are some hand held units out there for $105.00. Make sure you get the one with the biggest screen. 4.3 inch screen will hurt your eyes trying to see where you are going and probably not safe.

Buying a car GPS device is hard, especially if you never owned one before.. But don't worry. Here are some helpful hints on what features are available on most GPS devices, which features you do or don't need, what the highest rated models are, and what you can expect to pay (hidden costs and all).

Screen size is an important feature for GPS devices. Old models have a small 4.3" tiny screen, NEWER models will have at least 5" color touch widescreen. So be careful and hesitant to listen to someone if they offer you to buy a GPS with 4.3" screen - trust me, someone will offer a used, refurbished, or worse a 4.3" screen model and tell you that the price is good, LOL. A larger screen provides a larger map view and more context to where you are and what's coming up. Battery life is important too, but most GPS's have the option of hooking up the car charger to the unit while driving. Most units have 4-7 hours of battery life - my Newelectronx GPS claims 10 hours of battery life, but I have never tested it. (grin) Also the screen size of the Newelectronx model is 5 INCHES.

Most Garmin GPS's have a 4.3" screen and up to 6.5 / 7 hours of battery life.

Most Newelectronx GPS's have a 5" screen and up to 10 hours of battery life.

Depending on your traveling needs, you may be fine with a GPS unit with just US maps. You can also get units with maps of Canada and maps of Europe already pre-loaded. Be careful, remember I mentioned don't buy a GPS with a 4.3" screen. Well if you do, remember I said it was the older kind - well with the older version comes the older maps. Retailers generally do not update the maps on their GPS's. So you might be stuck with a GPS with old maps on it. That would suck royally because new maps will cost you at least $60.00 to $99.00 for updates.

So, for instance if you get a cheap Garmin or TomTom with 4.3" screen for sale for about $124.00 (plus shipping of at least $13 to $25) remember you might have to buy maps too. So, let's take the lower price $60 + $124.00 = $184.00 (dont forget that shipping and taxes) - grin, add that in too.

The Text-to-Speech feature is a very helpful safety feature that keeps your eyes on the road. The unit announces the turn-by-turn directions, using the actual street names.

The Mio, TomTom, Garmin, and Newelectronx includes US maps and the Text-to-Speech feature.

With real-time traffic reporting (an additional monthly expense), your unit will alert you to upcoming traffic situations in your route and will allow you to calculate a detour. Multi-point routing allows you to enter multiple destinations (like an errand run - cool feature on my Newelectronx GPS), and the device calculates the most efficient route between them all.

The Magellan features both real-time traffic reporting and multi-point routing with an extra charge (of course).

Bluetooth functionality allows you to synch your Bluetooth-enabled mobile phone for hands-free calling. You can also use the FM transmitter functionality to hear your phone (and the GPS driving directions) through your car speakers. Almost all GPS devices hold %26amp; display digital photos, and some store %26amp; play .mp3 audio files.

The TomTom and Newelectronx has Bluetooth, FM transmitter, and photos/mp3 media.

Here is a special note you might want to know. Garmin has recently price dropped the price on their older version GPS's and some of the newer version GPS in order to compete with newer GPS that have arrived on the scene. Keep in mind that old Garmin's may have old maps and with old maps comes that FEE, I mentioned. Most Garmin's features a 4.3" tiny screen display, maps of the US and an extra cost for Canada/Europe, Text-to-Speech directions, real-time traffic reporting (reciever included), Bluetooth, photos/mp3 media, FM transmitter, and up to 7 hours of battery life. It has everything but multi-point routing in a conveniently slim design. TomTom runs about the same cost.

Most Newelectronx GPS's features a 5" touch color widescreen display, maps of the US, Canada, Europe, Africa, Israel, and more at no extra cost (no map update cost), Text-to-Speech directions, Bluetooth, photos/mp3 media, FM transmitter, and up to 10 hours of battery life. It has everything INCLUDING multi-point routing in a conveniently slim design. At $105, it's an incredible bargain!

GPS are perfect for automobiles, backpacks, purses, RVs, or while bicycling. The easiest and most intuitive personal GPS navigation on the market can be hard to choose, but now you have more information to help you make an informative buy. Good luck.

Is there a GPS Navigation device that works in DOWNTOWN Chicago surrounded by skyscrapers?

First off I would like to appreciate all of you for taking the time to view and/or answer this question.

I was wondering...

Is there a GPS Navigation device that works in DOWNTOWN Chicago surrounded by skyscrapers?

I have tried several GPS units and they all seem to lose connection when I get in between the large buildings in downtown Chicago so I was wondering if there is some sort of special device that will work in this situation?

Price is not an issue.

Thanks again!|||I've used my gps in Downtown Chicago for 6-8 months and I was really happy with it. It's a Garmin 205w. Give it a try;you can find it for around $100 on internet.I put a link where you can buy it from. Before you spend hundreds of dollars on a fancy one , try this one.

How do you charge a car gps system if you don't have a cigarette lighter or power outlet?

I'm thinking of buying a gps navigator and my car doesn't have a way to charge it. I don't see AC chargers on the advertisements.|||you can go to radioshack and get a cigarette lighter outlet and wire it in to you fuse box. or buy an AC/ DC converter and charge it in you house using the AC outlet|||There are AC chargers for most GPS units. Search online for one for the GPS you're thinking of buying, or choose a GPS you can find an AC charger for. For example you can find a variety of AC chargers for Magellan units: http://www.gpsgeek.com/browse/gilsson-gp鈥?/a>

You could also look into adding a lighter power outlet to your car, a very simple modification.|||You could try buying the RightWay 430, I have it cause I have no cigarette lighter in my car, it comes with an ac adapter and has a battery life of around 4 hours in full use. How can I get my small business on the gps?

We own a small business. Recently we bought a Intellinav GPS. We are not listed on there. Who do we contact to get on the gps?|||Intellinav almost certainly buys their map data, likely from Navteq or TeleAtlas. Both companies allow you to submit data.

http://mapreporter.navteq.com/dur-web-ex鈥?/a>

It's worth mentioning that it may take several months for these guys to process and then a year or more for Intellinav to incorporate the new data from their vendor. It's not a fast process as the pipeline is long.|||I used http://www.gpslistingservice.com to list our business on all the GPS Point of Interest (POI) Listings. It was really cheap to do it. less than $20.00 and it showed up on my personal GPS on the next update. It took two weeks and we saw A 10-20 percent increase in sales because of it.

|||Depending on what type of business you own and how long you have been in business.

If it is a gas station, a restaurant, you will probably have a better chance to have your business listed faster, if you own a clothing store or a pet grooming service, chances are you will not be listed any time soon.

Visit a local estiblished GPS retailer such as Auto Nav 2000 Plus, Inc and try to look up your business in the top 3 GPS manufacturer's model such as Garmin Nuvi 880, TomTom 930 or the Magellan 4250 to make sure your business is not already listed in the POI data base and Intellinav did not select to pay for the full set of POI content that is available to them.

To ensure your business maybe listed under POI content, make sure you have a business license and you are listed in the local business section in Yellow pages, you will also need to contact companies such as Info-USA, D%26amp;B etc where NavTeq and TA get their POI content. I would also contact NavTeq and TA directly to see if you can add your business in their POI directory.

DASH navigation provides Yahoo real time search feature, so go on Yahoo local and register your business so it is available when someone with a DASH PND search for business near their locations.

I would say in the near future we will have to pay for these listing like we do with Yellow pages.

Make sure your business have a website and web present.

It takes about 12-18 months after they get your information to be listed and who knows how long it will take for these GPS manufacturers to make your business available under their POI selection.

Remember the cheaper GPS PND that does not have to many POI information will probably not list your business if it is not in the top search categories.

I'm considering buying a GPS, probably a Garmin Nuvi 750, but if my next cell phone might fulfill the same duties, maybe I won't.

Thanks for any information or advice!|||Phones can be used for car navigation but they are not as accurate as a stand alone device like the Nuvi. Another drawback is the small screen. Nothing beats a dedicated navigation device. Buy the Nuvi.|||the phone navigations are kinda cool but can be hard to read especially if your screen is small. The Tomtom ONE 3rd edition is quite inexpensive. I wanted to know if it auto recalculates the directions if you miss a turn or skip a street. It is unfortunate the it doesn't have text-to-speech. What company make the best GPS systems for a good price? And what model of it do u like the best?

I have heard Garmin makes really nice GPS systems but some say tom tom isnt bad however others say Sony is the best. Which are the best?|||No handheld GPS devise is really great for a CAR!! For the money ANY.....LAPTOP NAV SOFTWARE is a better way to go!! What I mean is, for under $100.00 US you can buy software and GPS to plug into any laptop made in the last 10 years. This still is the smartest and best, by far!!

Another and better way to go other than the handhelds, laptops and PDA鈥檚 is the OEM CAR NAV!! WHY!!! It uses multi measurements!! Alpine is the best at this by far.. Moreover, has been the best in OEM and aftermarket for over ten years.

Most of Garmin's products are just toy for hikers!! None of the car or boat makers use it.

Multi measurements use in Alpine and OEM units means; it tracks your driving distances alone with the GPS satellite. It tracks, tire turns, speedometer and keeps calibration calculation to best position you if the GPS signals is lost or ever weak. Best of all is......the amount of additional info, like traffic, Zaget and other info. Plus they will talk to you!! Most OEM units are hands free. Alpine best鈥s only in Acura!! Acura Nav system from Alpine is the best in the world by far!! Best of all it can work with LIVE....local traffic. So it will re-route you quickly. This is without you doing anything! My wife loves it!!

Another good aftermarket unit, is the top of the line Pioneer for under $1000.00 US. Dealer cost is now under $600.00US!!

Now for a DEAL!! Get the Dual at Best Buy for under $500.00 US when on sale!! This is a great deal and far better than any hand held unit!!

Now for those portable/handheld units; TomTom get last years model....! They can often be found for half off retail price. So TomTom or Garmin is fine for basic info not driving. But buy last year鈥檚 model!! You are not getting much on the newer units!!

LAST and most important!! THE GPS WAR is OVER!!

CELL PHONES, like IPOD and TRIO is the way to go for the $$$ dollars!! Most of world's manufactures of GPS, know they have SHORT market life ahead, based on the new phones coming out!!

Navtec, the leading mapping software for all the above products.... was bought out completely by Nokia..! They are the 1# cell phone makers in the world!

So everyone is freaking out at all the above companies!!

They all will be out of the GPS/NAV market soon!! Why dose anyone need more than one GPS/NAV unit!! Moreover Cell Phones will work the best and be the most updated and offer the most features, like calling for HELP!!

In the NEW world, we will get everything on our phones!! Moreover will not ever have an GPS, Ipod or even a PDA! WHY because the newest phones and services make it, so you do not even need a home phone, internet nor cable TV connection or any Microsoft software!! IBM and AT%26amp;T new this back in the 80鈥檚! Why do think IBM gave up on OS2? Because the future of PC and home entrainment will soon be on everyone鈥檚 cell phone!! NOT an I-POD!!

FYI

Many companies had products on the market to do all of this 20 years ago! The only difference today is, the NEW Mobile Web WAR and MP4!! Plus NOW鈥? AT%26amp;T, Google and Nokia plan to work to together on one format for NAV, Traffic, Communication, computing and entertainment, like games!! At the last S3 game convention everyone was mostly focused on Cell phone games future.... not Playstation nor Xbox.

The Mobile WEB format that wins in China cell phones, will soon dominate the world!! This means we all will get new phones with GPS, TV, Movies and every kind of software and communication on our Phones. Just look at what an I-Phone can new now!! This is nothing to what is coming out at CES2008

PS

Sony is the worst by far!! They were first in the market in the early 90's. But have fallen far behind everyone else.|||I like the TomTom. Loading Traffic Camera Warnings is easy:

|||I have used a rangefinder with limited success; currently own a Skycaddie and swear by it.

Unless the course you're playing has GPS in their carts, the Skycaddie is the way to go. Unlike other rangefinders, it gives you various distances (layup to key points, not just the centre of the green or the flag).

As someone who plays 80-120 rounds from April-October and plays in tournaments, I get a lot of use out of my Skycaddie.

The negatives are the cost; they're not cheap, and you do have to pay an annual fee. If you play a lot of golf and don't always ride, it's a good investment (they're legal in USGA/R%26amp;A competitions). If you only play a couple dozen rounds, it may not be a good investment.

Unfortunately, caddies are a dying species (I got my start 20 odd years ago as a caddie), and frankly, good caddies are hard to find (which is sad since it's a great point of entry into the game), but the reality is that short of having a caddy, my Skycaddie is the next best thing.|||If you have a cell phone with an internal GPS, then dump the idea of having to buy a dedicated GPS entirely. GolfTraxx can give you MORE targets, spot on distances and it is a downloadable SW to your phone. FREE if you map a course that is not in the database.

Nearly any course you would want to map can be mapped by you, at home using your computer. Take about 45 minutes.
