How do you track a GPS device using the internet?

I have a Garmin GPS device and I'd like to know if there is a way to see its position using the internet.|||The other answer is excellent. But as to your basic question, a standard GPS only receives the satellite signals and computes it's location from them. It doesn't send any signals out that can be used to display it's location with any other system, including the internet.|||If you get a ham radio license, you can. You will have to get the license, or you will get a fine from the FCC and people do watch for unlicensed users. It is called APRS.

To get the license, you can get a radio License manual from the ARRL.

After you study the manual and are comfortable with the practice exams, find a testing in your area. Tests are up to $7.00, I think some may do it for free. Enter your zip code in this link

You can also locate a local club to find people to assist you.

or you can go to a hamfest (swapmeet) a good place to find equipment.

Once you get your license, you will need a radio and a TNC (like a modem, but for radio). You can get a radio like the Kenwood TH-D7A/g (the "g" has a little more features. if is is not a "g" it should cost less). It has the TNC built in and won't require a computer. It will also plug into a computer. Your GPS will need to have a serial cable to connect it to the radio. Here is an example of the radio on ebay.

Once you have your radio and license, you can go to a site like findu.com. You will find your local APRS frequency beacon your callsign (ham radio license ID) and withing a couple minutes it will show on the webpage. enter your zipcode here You might see "WB4APR" He created APRS.

You can click "nearby APRS activity" to see others in the area, or click display track to see where someone has traveled.

You could hide this system in your car and build a remote controlled engine kill switch. If your care is stolen, you can call the police and tell them where it is and kill the engine when they catch up to it.
