Do you know of a cheap affordable GPS that I will be able to use for planning out elk hunts, and that will be able to help me get back to the truck?|||Any of the Garmin series of eTrex GPS receivers will get you home. Prices go up depending on what level of mapping software they have. Basic mapless ones start at about $100 new, but you can pick up good used ones on eBay for $50-$80. Mapping ones go around $100-$200.|||i would strongly recommend that you go to newelectronx and look at a model called primo - 50 style. it does anything that the higher end gps's do.. it gives you all the features of the Garmin Nuvi 3790T or Motorola MotoNav TN765t. These are currently 2 of the top most gps and they cost well over $200 each. The newelectronx gps model has features from both of these top brands rolled into one gps and at an affordable price or cheap price like you asked for. i did some research on the company newelectronx and you should too before you consider purchasing from any company. i have found that they are approved to receive paypal, moneybookers, and google checkout and they have been recognized as an online merchant for almost 10 years. i had to make sure they were legit before i spent my money there. did not want to be scammed. and i was not, so that is why i am recommending them to you and their gps to you, because i know the gps quality is beyond imagination and i know that it will work to help you find elk during hunting and find your way back to your truck. good luck and i hope you find the right gps for you even if my advice is not sound or good enough for you.|||There is a 'bushnell backtrack gps', that is simply a push button at truck, and then arrows aim back to your saved destination telling you the way to go back to setpoint, whereever you go. It is the most simple, doesn't rely on downloads, and is most basic. I Would still carry a compass and just look at a paper map ahead of time to know which direction to go back to a main road.
Backtrack Sells for about 50-60$ have seen it often on sale brouchures.|||I have found the Garmin GPS units to be the most user friendly and the best on the market as far as price and quality are concerned. But here is a tip- always carry spare batteries and a compass for back up. And on the rare occasion when it "freezes" up on you, take out the battery and replace it in a minute or two. It will then "reboot" itself much like a computer. I consider the GPS unit to be the greatest outdoor invention of the century.|||I have been looking at the Garmin GPSMAP 76 myself. It is waterproof, seems to have all the important features and is one of the more affordable good quality ones I've seen. Here's an article on it you might find useful.
